Q: What size Skate Deck to I choose?
A: To choose a skateboard deck size follow the chart below. This chart is based on beginner and intermediate skaters.
Height = Deck Size
Under 4' = 29" Deck or smaller
4' - 4'10" = 29" - 30" Deck
4'10" - 5'3" = 30.5"- 31.5" Deck
5'3" - 5'8" = 31.5" - 32" Deck
5'8" - 6'1" = 32" - 32.5" Deck
Over 6'1" = 32.4" Deck and up
The width of the skateboard will depend on your foot size. The common size is between 7.5" to 8" Width.
Most Skate Park riders will use a wider board around 8", and most street riders will go more narrow around 7.5" width for tricks.
Q: How do I know what Skateboard Wheels to order?
A: Skateboard Wheels come in a variety of sizes, colors and degrees of hardness. There are two different statistics used in determining wheel size:
The Diameter - The height of the Wheel
The Durometer - The hardness of the wheel
The most common size wheels have a diameter of between 52 MM and 54 MM and a durometer of 99A
Here are some suggestions by Skater Type:
Street - 50-55 MM wheels with a 97-110A Hardness makes for easier tricks.
Park and Bowl - Use 55-60 MM/95-100A Hardness makes for good for rolling faster.
Combo Street/Park - Use 52-60 MM/95-100A Hardness is a good balance between the two.
Cruising - Use 64-75MM/78-85A Hardness gives you speed and ability to ride over rough terrain.
Q: What are Skateboard Bearings and what rating do I order?
A: Bearings are the metal rings that fit inside the wheels. They are rated on a scale called the ABEC Scale with a rating from 1-9 in only odd numbers.
An ideal ABEC rating for skateboard bearings is 3 or 5 ABEC.
Q: How do I know what size Skateboard Trucks to order for my skateboard?
A: Follow this chart to match the truck width with your skateboard deck width:
4.75 for up to 7.5" wide decks
5.0 for up to 7.75" wide decks
5.25 for up to 8.125" wide decks
For 8.25" and up, you can use 5.25 trucks, or use super wide trucks.
Truck Height:
Trucks come in Low, Medium and High Heights:
Low trucks use smaller wheels and are good for flip tricks and good stability.
High trucks use larger wheels for higher speed and longer distance.
Most skaters use a medium or high truck for cruising and low trucks for street skating.
Q; What are skateboard Bushing and what would I order?
A: Bushings are a small part inside the truck that is shaped like a rubber doughnut and is used to cushion the truck while it turns. The stiffer the bushing the more stable the skateboard. Newer skateboarders should use a stiffer bushing. More seasoned skaters can us a medium bushing. Soft bushings make tricks more difficult and need lots of control.
Q: What is Grip Tape used for?
A: Gip tape is the sandpaper like layer that covers the top of the skateboard deck. You can have it put on your deck at a local skate shop or apply it yourself. There are directions on how to apply grip tape on About.com. They offer step by step instructions to help you apply it correctly.
